When the News Goes Dark, Read the Tape
Goldzweig Morning Briefing, 10 June 2026
Bitcoin trades at 61,688 this morning, down 2.2 percent in twenty four hours. Ethereum sits at 1,639, off 3 percent. The Fear and Greed Index prints 10, deep into extreme fear territory. Headline data unavailable overnight, which itself tells you something: the market is moving on positioning and sentiment, not news.
The number that matters most today is not the price. It is the CPI print dropping later this morning. April came in at 3.8 percent headline, core at 2.8 percent. If today confirms that stickiness, the Warsh Fed has no room to move, and the first rate cut slides further toward 2027. That is the macro frame for everything else. This is a liquidity contraction story. Bitcoin is a passenger, not the driver.
Bitcoin holding above 60,000 is the single most important structural fact in this tape. The desk view since yesterday has been neutral to bullish, contrarian into the fear, and that view is not changing. Extreme fear readings at this level have historically marked accumulation zones, not distribution zones. Howard Marks built a career on that observation. The crowd panics, the disciplined buyer makes a list. The question the desk is watching is whether 60k holds as a floor or proves to be a waystation. So far it holds.
Ethereum at 1,639 with an RSI approaching oversold is not automatically a buy. Capital in a liquidity contraction does not rotate down the risk curve. It consolidates into majors and stablecoins. That is the on chain signal worth reading right now. Stablecoin supply is the structural bid sitting beneath this market, waiting. ETF outflows appear to have paused. If flows turn positive into the FOMC on June 16 and 17, that is the confirmation the desk is looking for.
The tail risk has not gone away. The Iran ceasefire remains fragile and unsigned. An escalation that breaks Hormuz reprices oil, kills the rate cut path entirely, and turns this orderly drawdown into something disorderly. Size accordingly.
Hold the view. Watch 60k. Watch the CPI number this morning.
Read the data, not the hype.
